Spooky Season Without the Stress: 15 Easy Halloween Ideas for Mums
Make sure you are dressed accordingly. Grab one of our cool Ghosty or Dia de los Muertos tops to ensure you are all set for October - and beyond…!

Halloween has become an EVENT.

Costumes. Decorations. Pumpkin patches. Parties. School activities. Trick or treating. Baking. Instagram-worthy front doors.

And somehow Mum is expected to make the magic happen.

My philosophy?

Make the memories. Skip the pressure.

Children rarely remember whether your pumpkin looked Pinterest-perfect. They remember dressing up, staying out after dark, eating something they weren't normally allowed to eat and laughing with you.

So here are 15 easy ways to do Spooky Season without creating another full-time job.

1. Create a Halloween treasure hunt

Hide five or ten clues around the house or garden and finish with a small Halloween treat.

Simple. Cheap. Brilliant fun.

2. Have a spooky movie night

Pyjamas. Popcorn. Blankets. Done.

Let the kids choose the film and make an event of doing absolutely nothing.

3. Decorate pumpkins without carving

Paint them. Add stickers. Use washable pens.

Especially useful if you're doing Halloween with younger children.

4. Make Halloween pizzas

Use cheese, olives, peppers or veggie toppings to create ghosts, spiders and monster faces.

They don't need to look perfect.

In fact, the worse they look, the better.

5. Go on a Halloween lights walk

Wrap up, grab a torch and walk around your neighbourhood spotting pumpkins, decorations and spooky houses.

6. Create a spooky sensory box

Think dried pasta, toy spiders, mini pumpkins, leaves and little Halloween characters.

7. Play Halloween hide and seek

Turn the lights down, give everyone a torch and make normal hide and seek slightly more dramatic.

8. Bake something easy

Cupcakes and biscuits are ideal.

Buy them ready-made if necessary and let the kids decorate them.

No judgement here.

9. Make a Halloween playlist

A ten-minute kitchen dance party can sometimes create more joy than an expensive day out.

10. Visit a pumpkin patch

One of my favourite autumn traditions.

Get outside, get muddy and take the obligatory photo with the enormous pumpkin you have absolutely no intention of carrying home.

11. Make Halloween hot chocolate

Add marshmallows, whipped cream or sprinkles.

It's basically dessert in a mug.

12. Create a costume from things you already own

Before ordering another costume, raid the cupboards.

Old hats, scarves, dresses, face paint and random accessories can produce surprisingly brilliant results.

13. Have a spooky story night

Turn off the main lights, switch on a lamp or LED candle and make up stories together.

Let your child choose three random things that must appear in the story.

A witch.

A banana.

And Buckingham Palace?

Challenge accepted.

14. Do a Halloween scavenger hunt outside

Can you find:

A red leaf
A spider web
A pumpkin
Something orange
A black cat
A funny-shaped stick?

15. Let Halloween be imperfect

This is possibly the most important one.

Childhood doesn't need to be curated.

It needs to be lived.

The costume might fall apart. The pumpkin might look ridiculous. Someone may cry because their sibling got more sweets.

That is family life.

Make the memories anyway.

Independent Mamma Tip

Create a little Halloween box and reuse it every year. Decorations, cookie cutters, activity sheets, accessories and Halloween books can all come back out every October.

Less buying. Less waste. Less stress.

More fun.

Coming soon: Independent Mamma's Spooky Season Activity Pack, including a treasure hunt, scavenger hunt, colouring activities and Halloween games.

Hey there, and welcome to Independent Mamma, the home for badass moms who juggle it all—kids, chaos, and carving out their dreams.
